1. What is a TAR Book?

The TAR Book, or Training and Record Book, is one of the most important documents for any seafarer. After finishing pre-sea training, every seafarer must carry a TAR Book during onboard training. It records all tasks, duties, and responsibilities performed on the ship.

In simple terms, the TAR Book is like a performance diary that shows how well a trainee is adapting to real-life shipboard operations. Officers onboard verify and sign the entries, confirming that the seafarer has completed the required tasks. Without it, progressing to higher ranks or appearing for advanced maritime examinations becomes nearly impossible.
